Residential and transport containers
Corrosion protection of residential and tranpsort containers
With the development of industry, construction, trade and other economic branches, containers are becoming more widely used due to their practical nature. The containers may be divided into two main groups: transport and residential.
Transport containers enable transport of different types of goods and easy transloading, they also protect loads against atmospheric influences. Besides standard transport containers we can see also special containers for transport of perishable goods, explosives and other dangerous materials in the market. Besides special construction solutions, they also have the equipment, needed for the maintenance of demanding climatic and safety conditions. Due to their mobility and practicality residential containers are becoming increasingly important. They are used as warehouses for equipment, overnight accommodation of workers in construction sites or temporary dwellings in war time and other natural catastrophies. Recently they are used in constructions of permanently standing facilities ? the so called container complexes.
With regard to corrosion protection of containers, special attention has to be paid to usability of a container. We have to know, to which conditions a container will be exposed and what life durability of protection is required by a customer. In case of transport containers, we have to pay attention to the exposure to sea atmosphere, as there is much transport carried out by sea. Most damages of containers are mechanical, resulting from manipulation. The damaged areas, where the protective coating has been removed, exposing original surface may then become the focus of corrosive agents. Residential containers are also exposed to damages. In manufacturing of containers different materials are used (different types of steel, galvanised surfaces, coil coated metal, steel plate, polyester laminates, aluminium) therefore it is mandatory to define a surface and its preparation before selecting the system. In practice a very important factor of corrosion protection represent the design of steel constructions. It is necessary to avoid direct contacts of different metals, contacts of stiff parts with elastic sheet metal, bad sealing and places, where meteoric water could stagnate. Prior to lacquering, it is recommended to remove all sharp edges and welding remains.
In the continuation of this text only a part of systems for corrosion protection of containers is presented, which we in HELIOS offer according to international standards and trends. The selection of a system depends on the type of a container, individual parts to be protected, technological possibilities, producer's working conditions and container's exposure over time.
Only the correctly selected corrosion protection system, quality surface preparation and appropriate application of coatings can guarantee a long lasting durability of the protected containers.
We recommend corrosion protection systems according to the standard ISO 12944.
All detailed information on the systems and individual coatings may be obtained from our customers's service and authorized representatives.
